Yesterday when I went to do my errands I got into the car and looked out the windshield. A bug was on it. The bug's tiny triangular head tilted and turned, as the bug eyed me as carefully as I was eyeing it.
I didn't want to drive off and have it get hurt, though chances are when I started up it would have moved. So I got out of the car with a piece of paper and laid the edge near the forward appendages of the praying mantis. Spencer showed up then and I felt a need for haste, as I don't know if a cat would chew on a praying mantis.
It was a sickly pale color; I think it's the one I saw on the laundry room window, before the cold weather, and it was about the same color then.
It seemed to be missing a limb, until it started moving, which it did with enthusiasm. I couldn't tell if it was panic or aggression, so after it slid off the paper I tried a rear approach and then lifted it carefully, carefully.
"Hold still," I breathed. "I'm taking you to a nice sunny plant---"
But it flew off.
Last night, a giant moth wanted to fly into the office. It had a fat white furry moth body (amazing!) and big black-barred wings and was so very insistent that I got up and pulled the curtain. Shades of The Face in the Frost.
